Pelvic Health Physiotherapy for Female Patients

Pelvic Health Physiotherapy is the assessment and treatment of the pelvis and the various conditions that involve pelvic floor dysfunction or symptoms that manifest in this area. The pelvic floor is a group of muscles at the base of the spine which literally make up the floor of the pelvis. The pelvic floor has several important roles including; core stability, bladder and bowel continence, birthing, and sexual function. Any orthopaedic issue from the diaphragm to mid-thigh can involve the pelvic floor. If you are experiencing lumbopelvic, SI Joint, groin, hip, abdominal or lower extremity symptoms (pain or movement impairment) that are not improving as expected, consider a pelvic floor assessment.

Common reasons for seeking out Pelvic Health Physiotherapy include:

  • Urinary and/or bowel leakage

  • Frequent urination

  • Urgency: urinary and/or bowel

  • Constipation

  • Proactive support for pelvic health during pregnancy

  • Pelvic girdle discomfort during pregnancy

  • Post-partum rehabilitation

  • SI Joint pain and dysfunction

  • Rectus Diastasis

  • Pelvic Organ Prolapse (Bladder, Uterine, Bowel)

  • Tailbone pain

  • Low back pain

  • Pelvic Pain Conditions (vulvodynia, endometriosis, interstitial cystitis, pelvic congestion syndrome, etc).

  • Pain with intercourse

  • Painful menstruation

Your pelvic floor physiotherapy appointment begins with your therapist listening to your current concerns, medical history, symptoms, and goals for your treatment. The physical exam will check your posture, abdomen, breathing, and pelvic floor muscles. The pelvic floor muscle assessment usually requires an internal exam, either vaginal, rectal or both. There are still effective assessment and treatment options even if an internal exam isn’t an option for you. Your therapist may request you to complete a 2 or 3-day bladder and/or fibre diary to gain insight on your current bladder and bowel function. The analysis of the objective findings, your symptoms, and the goals for treatment will determine the appropriate manual therapy techniques, exercises, postural correction, lifestyle/behavioral modifications, and education.
