Lifestyle Medicine & PhysioYoga

Kim Deschamps

An in-depth and holistic whole-person approach to injury recovery, health and wellness.

Lifestyle Medicine is an approach to preventing, treating, and reversing disease by impacting unhealthy lifestyle behaviours, therefore promoting health. By diving deeper into the health story, we can determine how and why illness occurs, and restore health by addressing the root cause of disease and dysfunction. There are six main areas of focus with lifestyle medicine: a healthier eating pattern, increasing physical activity, effectively managing stress, maintaining social relationships, obtaining adequate sleep, and avoiding risky substance abuse.

PhysioYoga is a blended term that combines evidence informed physiotherapy and yoga therapy to approach health and rehabilitation resulting in a holistic or biopsychosocial approach to your rehabilitation experience. As defined by Shelly Prosko of Prosko PhysioYoga, physioyoga.ca

  • Kim Deschamps has completed the Medical Therapeutic Yoga Certification & Professional Yoga Therapist credential earned through Living Well Institute (formerly Professional Yoga Therapy Institute®). Kim values the training and teachings from all of her mentors within the physiotherapy and yoga therapy communities throughout North America. She has gained incredible knowledge and training to effectively assess and treat the whole person through movement, lifestyle management, mindfulness and meditation, nutrition for healthy living, sleep hygiene, stress, fatigue, and burnout prevention & management, injury recovery, chronic disease management, chronic & persistent pain treatment & management, and pelvic health assessment & treatment for urinary & bowel concerns and conditions, pelvic pain conditions, pregnancy support, labor & delivery preparation, postpartum rehabilitation, and pelvic trauma experiences under her scope of practice as a physiotherapist. Kim Deschamps assesses and treats her patients under her physiotherapy designation and utilizes the many tools in her toolbox and the expansive knowledge that she has in regards to holistic health, wellness & rehabilitation.

  • Yoga Therapy utilizes poses, breathing techniques, and meditation to benefit and improve overall health. While any type of yoga can bring health benefits, yoga therapy involves employing a variety of yoga practices to try to improve a health condition or to ease a natural process, such as pregnancy or menopause. Among the yogic tools used therapeutically are asana (the physical postures), Pranayama (breathing exercises), meditation, and guided imagery. Although many people don't realize it, yogis also consider diet an integral part of yoga and therefore of an important aspect of a yoga practice (McCall, 2007).

Therapeutic Yoga is an inherently holistic approach, simultaneously working on the body, mind, and spirit. Various yoga practices systematically strengthen different systems in the body, including the heart and cardiovascular system, the lungs, muscles, and the nervous system. Yoga practices can improve function of the digestive system, foster psychological well-being, and improve oxygen delivery to tissues. Yoga also can help the body more efficiently remove waste products, carcinogens, and cellular toxins (McCall, 2007).

Medical Therapeutic Yoga (MTY) offers an innovative methodology which changes both the practice of yoga and rehabilitative science by combining them, making MTY a distinct and separate practice from, but yet a complementary arm to, yoga and yoga therapy (Garner, 2016).

  • Physiotherapy is a healthcare profession which assists people to restore, maintain and maximize their strength, function, movement, and overall well-being. Physiotherapy can help you become stronger and more flexible, increase freedom of movement and mobility, breathe easier, reduce pain, stay active, prevent injury, and more - so you can resume activities important to you.

Definition from Saskatchewan Physiotherapy Association, 2017.

Physiotherapists have in-depth knowledge of how the body works and specialized hands-on clinical skills to assess, diagnose, and treat symptoms of illness, injury and disability. Physiotherapy includes rehabilitation as well as prevention of injury, and promotion of health and fitness (Saskatchewan Physiotherapy Association, 2017).

  • Trigger Point Dry Needling (TDN) involves placing a small filament needle into the muscle at the trigger point which is typically in an area where the muscle is tight and tender. The intent of TDN is to elicit a local twitch response to normalize muscle tone, therefore improving the mobility of the muscle and decreasing the symptoms. Dry Needling is performed by a licensed physical therapist who has received additional training in this technique. TDN is often an effective treatment for myofascial pain. Myofascial pain can be a component of many conditions including joint problems and soft tissue pathologies.

TDN as used in physical therapy is not acupuncture and should not be confused with a complete acupuncture treatment performed by a licensed acupuncturist. A complete acupuncture treatment might yield a holistic benefit not available through a focused dry needling treatment. Patients interested in acupuncture should consult with a licensed acupuncturist.

Our physiotherapist, Kim Deschamps MPT, BKin, PYT, BDN,  offers trigger point dry needling as an adjunct to her physiotherapy practice for the treatment of myofascial pain.  Appointments are booked as Physiotherapy.

Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy

For Both Men & Women

Kim Deschamps | Lindsey Tasker Cole | Danielle Bararuk

Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy is the assessment and treatment of the pelvis or pelvic girdle, and the various conditions that involve the pelvic floor. When the pelvic floor isn’t functioning well, pain or other symptoms can be referred to other areas- from the rib cage to the knees, and in some cases down to the foot. The pelvic floor is a sling of muscles from tail bone to the pubic bone which play a vital role within our inner core. Some other functions include; bladder and bowel continence, birthing, and sexual function. If you are experiencing lumbopelvic, SI Joint, groin, hip, abdominal or lower extremity symptoms (pain or movement impairment) that are not improving as expected, a thorough history and pelvic floor assessment may be the missing piece.

Pelvic health is important even if you aren’t experiencing any problems. Preventative care and preparation for labor and delivery can shorten delivery times and lessen potential injury to the pelvic floor structures.

Our pelvic health physiotherapists are trained to assess and treat both male and female urinary and bowel incontinence, constipation, prenatal and postpartum care, peri/menopause related issues, pelvic organ prolapse, and pelvic pain conditions.

Paediatric Physiotherapy

Danielle Bararuk | Julia Koop

We value a positive environment where the child feels supported and the family and the physiotherapist can work towards their goals.

Paediatric physiotherapy assists in early detection of health problems and uses a wide variety of modalities to treat disorders in the paediatric population.

Our Paediatric Physiotherapists assess and treat muscle tightness, muscle weakness, muscle endurance, postural control, balance, coordination and core stability.

Children may have received a diagnosis of torticollis, plagiocephaly, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, low muscle tone (hypotonia), autism spectrum disorder, developmental delay, or gross motor delay. Children may also purely be having trouble with motor skills that make it harder for them to keep up with their peers during activities.

Children with mild to severe motor delays can all benefit from physiotherapy. Examples of gross motor delays in the first couple years of life include crawling, sitting, walking, running, jumping, climbing and ball skills. Physiotherapy helps children improve their gross motor skills during development or after an accident or injury.

Physical Therapy visits are always play-based for babies and younger children, with the addition of gentle facilitation by the physiotherapist to promote independence in the desired motor skill.

Chiropractic Care

Dr. Carly Njaa | Dr. Madolyn Linka

Chiropractors are part of a mainstream health care discipline that use spinal adjustments and manual techniques as the primary methods of helping the body heal. Chiropractic focuses on the relationship between the structure (primarily the spine) and function (as coordinated by the nervous system) and how that relationship affects the preservation and restoration of health.

Chiropractors provide care for patients of all ages with a range of acute and chronic conditions. We use a variety of diagnostic methods, including x-rays & diagnostic ultrasound to discover the state of your musculoskeletal system.

Moving through a well-versed patient-led history, Dr. Linka and Dr. Njaa will help hone in on your chief health concerns. A physical examination is always preformed which helps to clarify what bodily structures, joints, nerves and tissues are being affected, which helps to form a concrete diagnosis. Together we create strategies to help optimize your healing potential through an individualized plan of management.

Chiropractic Care is proven to help:

  • Head, neck & shoulder pain

  • Mid and low back pain

  • Tingling/numbness into arms/legs

  • Headaches & whiplash

  • Elbow and wrist pain

  • Hip/pelvic issues

  • Sports, work or accident related injuries

  • Foot & ankle pain

  • TMJ/jaw pain

  • Balancing the nervous system for optimal functioning in all systems

  • Your spinal joints were designed with movement in mind. Chiropractic care restores proper spinal movement, alleviating stress on your tissues and allowing your body to function at its best. Common concerns that lead patients to chiropractic care include neck pain, back pain, injury, TMJ, migraines, and posture correction.

  • During pregnancy, your body undergoes a dramatic shift in a very short period of time. Structural shifts in your spine can lead to pain, discomfort, and irregular body function. Chiropractic care restores balance to your spine and nervous system, allowing for a more comfortable pregnancy, a safer and easier birth, and an easier transition into the postnatal period.

  • Just like adults, infants and children experience stress on their spines. Parents may choose to have their children assessed by a Chiropractor after birth, at developmental milestones such as learning to crawl or walk, or after a fall or injury. Paediatric Chiropractic care is gentle, safe, and effective during childhood development.

  • When your body deals with pain or injury, your nervous system changes in response to the stressor. Acupuncture can help you regulate nervous system activity, resulting in reduced pain, inflammation, and muscle tension.

  • Orthotics support proper biomechanics, correct abnormal motion, and accommodate for pathologies. Orthotics help with conditions such as pes planus, shin splints, plantar fasciitis, heel spurs, sesamoiditis, neruoma, low back pain, hip pain, ankle instability, lef length discrepency, chondromalacia, ITB syndrome.

Massage Therapy

Ashley Preete

Throughout the world, massage therapy is an important part of self-care and health care programs.

Massage therapy is widely recognized by patients and doctors alike as an effective means of treating soft tissue pain or disability and for its value in preventative care. Massage therapy is the manual manipulation of soft body tissues (muscles, connective tissue, tendons, and ligaments) to treat and prevent dysfunction and pain.

Massage can be used to treat a variety of conditions such as back and neck pain, headaches, arthritis, and stress. A registered massage therapist is educated in the areas of anatomy, physiology, pathology, remedial exercise, mobilizations, and massage practice and theory to treat their clients. Your massage appointment will include an assessment, treatment, and a home care plan to optimally support your health and well-being.

  • Relaxation massage is a gentle Swedish massage that uses smooth, gliding strokes to help you relax without focusing on easing any muscle soreness or tension. The massage therapist will move slower and use lighter pressure than therapeutic massages.

  • Deep tissue massage is a massage technique that’s mainly used to treat musculoskeletal issues, such as strains and sports injuries. It involves applying sustained pressure using slow, deep strokes to target the inner layers of your muscles and connective tissues. This helps to break up scar tissue that forms following an injury and reduce tension in muscle and tissue.

  • Cupping Therapy is a modified version of the common practice of cupping, used in traditional Chinese medicine. Cupping Massage will help break down rigid tissue (muscle and fascia), and assists in the release of excess fluids and toxins. It also promotes blood flow and can helps improve range of motion. The process involves the therapist putting special cups on your skin for a few minutes to create suction. The process uses negative pressure (suction) to lift the soft tissues of the body. This is "not" fire cupping. Generally patients get cupping for many purposes, including to help with pain, inflammation, blood flow, relaxation and well-being, and as a type of deep-tissue massage. After your session, the cups may leave bruise or bruise-like marks on your treated areas, The color and pattern of the marks depend on the level of stagnation in the area, and can range from a bright red to a dark purple, usually lasting 3 days to a week, sometimes a bit longer. Once our clients understand what these marks are, and feel the results, their concerns disappear, and they return for more sessions. Cups can be made out of silicone, rubber, glass, or even bamboo and can be left in place or moved along the body. Each session can last between 30-50 minutes depending on the area in which requires treatment.

  • Ashley holds a registration with MTAS and is accredited with both WCB and SGI for providing massage therapy for individuals who have been approved for massage therapy under their injury claim number.

Barb Beavis

Functional Nutrition is the answer to some of the problems in health and healthcare today. A modality that works to not just support, but educate the patient in what’s going on in their body and how making uniquely targeted diet and lifestyle modifications will shift the terrain and help them to meet their goal

Diets don’t work. In my practice I don’t promote the one-size-fits-all approach. We are all unique. Symptoms of disease can be exacerbated by what you may think is a healthy diet or protocol. Together we can find INDIVIDUALIZED solutions and work together to achieve optimal health through a systems based approach and a therapeutic relationship using Functional Nutrition as a tool.
