Physiotherapist, Vestibular Therapist, Certified Dance Instructor
At Holistic Physiotherapy & Wellness, we’re pleased to offer Vestibular Physiotherapy in Saskatoon and Area with our experienced physiotherapist, Maegan Marshall. Vestibular therapy is a specialized form of physical therapy designed to treat dizziness, vertigo, balance disorders, and other symptoms related to inner ear and brain function. This system, located in the inner ear and brain, is responsible for maintaining balance, spatial orientation, and coordinating movement with vision. When it becomes damaged or dysfunctional, it can lead to symptoms such as dizziness, vertigo, imbalance, visual disturbances, nausea, and difficulty walking.
About Vestibular Physiotherapy
-
Vestibular therapy is commonly used to treat a wide range of vestibular conditions, including:
Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV): Characterized by brief episodes of vertigo triggered by head movements. This is often treated with repositioning maneuvers such as the Epley maneuver.
Vestibular Neuritis and Labyrinthitis: Inflammation of the inner ear or vestibular nerve, leading to sudden dizziness, vertigo, and/or balance loss.
Post-Concussion Syndrome: Dizziness and balance issues that persist after a head injury.
Persistent Postural-Perceptual Dizziness (PPPD): A chronic condition characterized by non-spinning dizziness and unsteadiness that worsens with motion, posture changes, or visual stimulation.
Age-Related Balance Decline or Fall Risk: Therapy can help older adults improve stability and confidence in walking to prevent falls.
Motion Sensitivity and Visual-Vestibular Mismatch: Discomfort or disorientation in busy environments (e.g., grocery stores, driving).
-
Vestibular therapy is tailored to each individual’s symptoms, diagnosis, and goals. After a detailed evaluation by a trained therapist, a personalized treatment plan is developed.
Therapy may include:
Canalith Repositioning Maneuvers: Techniques like the Epley maneuver for repositioning inner ear crystals in BPPV.
Gaze Stabilization Exercises: These help retrain the eyes to stay focused during head movements, often using fixed targets or dynamic visual stimuli.
Balance and Postural Training: Exercises to improve coordination, strength, and proprioception to reduce fall risk.
Habituation Exercises: Gradual exposure to movements or environments that provoke dizziness, helping the brain adapt and reduce symptoms.
Functional Mobility Training: Guidance for daily tasks, gait training, and improving confidence with movement in real-world settings.
Education: Information to help you understand the nature of your condition, as well as how to interpret and manage symptoms.
-
By promoting neuroplasticity—the brain's ability to adapt and reorganize—vestibular therapy helps the body adjust to vestibular deficits. The therapy improves the brain’s ability to compensate for inner ear dysfunction, ultimately reducing symptoms and enhancing daily functioning. Over time, most people experience:
Less dizziness and vertigo
Improved balance and coordination
Increased confidence with walking and movement
Reduced risk of falls
Greater participation in daily activities and social life
Vestibular therapy is a powerful, evidence-based approach to treating balance and dizziness disorders. With a personalized plan and consistent effort, it can significantly improve comfort, mobility, and quality of life for those struggling with vestibular dysfunction.

If you're experiencing unexplained dizziness, vertigo, imbalance, or visual motion sensitivity, Vestibular Physiotherapy may be right for you. Maegan provides gentle, personalized care to support your recovery and improve your confidence in movement.
